The backbone of any Asset Protection plan is an Asset Protection Trust. The strength of your Asset Protection Trust depends greatly on which jurisdiction you choose to register your trust. There are two main options when selecting a jurisdiction for your APT.
First, there are Foreign Trusts which offer the greatest level of Asset Protection but are relatively expensive to create and maintain. Second, you have domestic Asset Protection Trusts which are less expensive to create and maintain but do not offer the same level of security as the off-shore trusts.
And finally, there’s the Bridge Trust. The Bridge Trust combines the best of both worlds. The Bridge Trust is initially a domestic Trust so it is less expensive to create and maintain, however, if the trust property is ever threatened, your assets can cross the bridge and you have the protection of a foreign Trust.
