So you’re wondering if you should create a will online? If you ask an attorney what they think of online legal tools, their response will likely be something along the lines of…
“I had a client whose parents created a Will online, and because of it the two of the children received nothing, the third child had to declare bankruptcy, and the fourth child had to get sold to the circus…”
Maybe the story you heard was a little different, but most attorneys I have spoken with don’t have a lot of good things to say about online drafting tools. However, one has to wonder, is this just job protection? Is it possible to create a will? Online may or may not be the best medium.
I have seen Wills drafted poorly from online software, and I have seen Wills drafted poorly by other attorneys. The truth is, online Wills work just fine for some people and they don’t work at all for others. The amount of time, effort, and cost you want to put into your Estate Plan is ultimately your decision, however, if you are going to make the effort write a Will, why not first speak to an attorney who reviews Estate Plans everyday.
