A Power of Attorney is a document, which allows you to designate another person to act on your behalf for making financial or medical decisions in case of your incapacity.
A Financial Power of Attorney gives another person the ability to manage your investments, pay your bills, or buy and sell real estate on your behalf.
A Medical Power of Attorney allows another individual to make medical decisions, or other decisions regarding your care and well being, on your behalf if you are not able to make those decisions yourself.
If you do not have a Financial and Medical Power of Attorney and you become incapacitated, the court may need to appoint an individual to act on your behalf. This may not be the individual you want acting on your behalf. Furthermore, if the court gets involved it will likely cost many, many times more than what it would cost to create a simple Financial or Medical Power of Attorney.
